ADVANTAGES AND REGULATIONS
Parking closer to your destination is not the only advantage to having a handicap permit.
To name a few advantages:
- Parking in any designated disabled parking space
- Parking in on-street metered regular spaces for up to 4 hours free
- Permanent handicap applications and permits are free ($15 for temporary permits, free if second placard within a year)
- Permits are valid in all U.S. states and territories, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland
However, these come with restrictions and rules. Including (not limited to):
- Visibly displaying the permit when parking
- When driving the permit is stowed
- No parking in “No Parking” areas
- Only the disabled person can use the permit ($1,000 fine, up to $250 in fines, and/or up to one year in jail)
It is best, as rules and regulations vary, to check specific parking rules by city when traveling or in areas that are not well known.
